About El Niño

El Niño is Spain’s annual Epiphany lottery, drawn every 6 January. Five-digit ticket numbers from 00000–99999 are entered, with prizes awarded for complete numbers, approximations and matching final digits.

How It Works
Each full ticket, known as a billete, carries a five-digit number and is divided into ten equal portions called décimos. Players commonly purchase a €20 décimo rather than the entire ticket. The same number is issued across multiple series, allowing many players to hold the winning number. Prizes are awarded for the three main winning numbers, approximations, matching final digits and reintegros. The first prize pays €2 million per full ticket in each series, equivalent to €200,000 per décimo.
Jackpot & Rollover
El Niño does not have a rolling jackpot. Its prize fund is fixed separately for each annual draw. The first prize pays €2 million per full ticket in each series, equivalent to €200,000 for a standard €20 décimo. Because each five-digit number is issued in multiple series, the first prize may be paid to numerous ticket and décimo holders.

Tax Information

Spanish lottery prizes are generally exempt from tax up to €40,000 per winning décimo. Any portion above this allowance is normally subject to 20% withholding tax, deducted before payment. Based on the standard €200,000 first prize for one décimo, €160,000 is taxable, producing a €32,000 deduction and a net payment of €168,000. Where a décimo is shared, the tax-free allowance and taxable prize are divided among the owners according to their respective shares. Winners residing outside Spain may also have reporting or tax obligations in their country of residence.

The first draw officially recognised as the predecessor of today’s El Niño Lottery took place on 5 January 1941. It was introduced as an extraordinary Lotería Nacional draw and became established as an annual event associated with Epiphany.
El Niño Name Became Official
Fact
The name Sorteo de El Niño appeared officially on tickets for the first time in 1966. Before then, the draw had been promoted under more general descriptions such as an extraordinary January or Epiphany draw.
Draw Moved to 6 January
Fact
El Niño was held on 6 January for the first time in 2000, establishing its present position on Spain’s Epiphany holiday. Earlier editions had normally been drawn on 5 January.
First El Niño Draw in Euros
Fact
The 2002 El Niño draw was the first in which ticket prices and prizes were denominated in euros following Spain’s replacement of the peseta.
€2 Million First Prize
Fact
El Niño’s first prize pays €2 million per full ticket in each series. Because a full ticket is divided into ten décimos, a standard €20 décimo carrying the winning number receives €200,000 before any applicable tax deduction.
