About El Gordo de Navidad
El Gordo de Navidad is Spain’s annual Christmas Lottery, drawn every 22 December. Five-digit ticket numbers from 00000–99999 are entered, with prizes awarded for complete numbers, partial matches and matching final digits.
How It Works
Each full ticket, known as a billete, carries a five-digit number and is normally divided into ten equal portions called décimos. Players commonly purchase one or more décimos rather than an entire ticket. The same five-digit number is issued across multiple series, allowing many people to hold the winning number. Prizes are awarded for the main winning numbers, approximations, number combinations and matching final digits. The first prize, known as El Gordo, pays €4 million per full ticket or €400,000 per décimo, subject to the official rules for that year’s draw.
Jackpot & Rollover
El Gordo de Navidad does not have a rolling jackpot. Its prize fund is fixed separately for each annual draw. The first prize, known as El Gordo, pays €4 million per full ticket in each series, equivalent to €400,000 for a standard €20 décimo. Because the same five-digit number is issued in many series, the first prize may be paid to numerous ticket and décimo holders across Spain.

Tax Information
Spanish lottery prizes are generally exempt from tax up to €40,000 per winning décimo. Any portion of a prize above this allowance is normally subject to 20% withholding tax, deducted before payment. Based on the standard €400,000 El Gordo prize for one décimo, €360,000 is taxable, producing a €72,000 deduction and a net payment of €328,000. Where a décimo is shared, the tax-free allowance and taxable prize are divided among the owners according to their respective shares. Winners residing outside Spain may also have reporting or tax obligations in their country of residence.

The draw was first popularly identified as the Sorteo de Navidad in 1892. The name became its official title five years later, in 1897.
First Televised Christmas Draw

The Spanish Christmas Lottery draw was televised for the first time in 1957. Its distinctive presentation, in which pupils from Madrid’s San Ildefonso school sing the winning numbers and prizes, became a major Spanish Christmas tradition.
First Christmas Draw in Euros
Fact
The 2002 Christmas Lottery was the first in which ticket prices and prizes were denominated in euros following Spain’s replacement of the peseta. The first prize was set at €2 million per full ticket series, equivalent to €200,000 per décimo.
El Gordo Increased to €4 Million
Fact
The first prize was increased to €4 million per full ticket in each series for the 2011 Christmas Lottery. This is equivalent to €400,000 for a standard one-tenth décimo.
